Modugno
Welcome to Modugno: a growing manufacturing center
Hello everyone! Are you ready to explore Modugno with me? This city in the heart of Puglia, with its 36,208 inhabitants, is located in the immediate hinterland of Bari, a few kilometers southwest of the Apulian capital.
In the 1960s, the construction of the industrial area of Bari led to a rapid economic and demographic development of Modugno, which replaced its traditional agricultural vocation to become a growing manufacturing center. In 2010, the city received the title of Città d'Italia from the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano.
Physical geography: a limestone territory
The Modugno territory is mainly flat but has a slight slope ascending towards the Murgia. The minimum altitude is 45 m while the maximum is 106 m. The soil is limestone and affected by karst phenomena, such as the formation of underground caves.
The territory of Modugno is characterized by the almost complete absence of surface watercourses due to the Apulian karst. However, the city is located on the watershed between the basins of Lama Balice and Lamasinata, without presenting high risks of flood.
Climate: Mediterranean in Puglia
The climate in Modugno is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot, dry summers, mitigated by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea. The city is influenced by cold currents from the northeast in the winter months, sometimes resulting in snowy precipitation. Rainfall is concentrated in the winter months and characterized by an extremely variable regime.
The highest temperature recorded at the nearest meteorological station to Modugno was 45.6°C, while the absolute minimum temperature dates back to -6.0°C.
Origin of the name: a history of over a thousand years
The first document where the name of Modugno is found is dated May 1021. It is a contract with which a certain Traccoguda "from the place of Medunio" lent eight shillings to Giovanni and Mele di Bitetto, receiving in pledge a vineyard that was "in the very place of Medunio", along the road that connected Modugno to Bitetto.
The name could derive from the term "Medonis", perhaps a personal name, or from the Latin term "modio" which indicates a unit of measurement.
