The municipality of Moconesi was governed by the Fieschi family, and then became the domain of the Republic of Genoa from 1147. Moconesi is the birthplace of Giovanni Colombo, grandfather of Christopher Columbus.

During the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Moconesi was incorporated into the Gulf of Tigullio department and then again into the Tigullio canton in 1798. In 1815, the area was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and was part of the Chiavari province under the division of Genoa. In 1861, Moconesi returned to the Kingdom of Italy and was part of the VI district of Cicagna in the Chiavari district.
