History

The Province of Asti was founded in 1620 by King Charles Emmanuel I as one of the 42 provinces of the region. The area of the province shrank and grew over the years depending on conquests and wars. In 1814, the province returned under the Savoy dynasty after the French occupation period. In 1859, the Kingdom of Italy was divided into provinces, districts, mandaments, and municipalities, and the Province of Asti was divided among the provinces of Alessandria, Acqui, Casale Monferrato, Novi Ligure, and Tortona. In 1935, the Province of Asti was re-established with its initial 105 jurisdictions. In 1947-1949, 15 more municipalities were added, increasing the number of municipalities in the province to 120.
