History

Misano Adriatico has a long and interesting history. Archaeological finds demonstrate the presence of the Roman civilization in the area. In the following centuries, various settlements were established in the areas of Agina, Santa Monica, and Belvedere. The first written record of a settlement in the area concerns the construction in 997 of the Pieve di Sant'Erasmo, one of the oldest in the area and still existing today.

From 1295 to 1528, the village was under the dominion of the Malatesta family, who built a castle of which only the access arch and part of the tower remain today. Subsequently, following the decline of the Malatesta dynasty, it became part of the Papal State until the unification of Italy. In 1511 it was recognized as an autonomous medieval Commune; in 2011, its 500 years of independence from the municipality of San Clemente were celebrated.

After losing its administrative independence several times due to financial reasons, Misano Adriatico managed to regain it in 1827 by separating from the municipality of San Giovanni in Marignano. In 1935, the city risked losing it again to Cattolica, which requested the annexation of the Misano area, especially the beach, for its own tourist development. The request was rejected, also due to the intervention of Benito Mussolini, and in 1938 a measure was issued by which the name was changed from Misano to Villa Vittoria (whose origin dates back to 1862) and later to the current Misano Adriatico.

After World War II, reconstruction began, with tourist development that led in 1949 to the transfer of the municipal seat from Misano Monte to the current coastal area.
