History

Mirandola is a city with a very interesting history. The city retains its Renaissance fortress-city structure, with traces of its octagonal structure. Around Constituent Square, the central and reference nucleus of the entire city center, rise the buildings, partly original and partly rebuilt, belonging to the ancient great complex of the castle of the Pico family. The castle, after a period of decline that began in the early decades of the 18th century, has been completely restored, and on June 4, 2006, it was reopened to the public.

The historical core of Constituent Square is completed by the Palazzo della Ragione, in late Gothic style, the fifteenth-century Palazzo Bergomi, and the Palazzo Comunale. The walls that surrounded the city were demolished at the end of the nineteenth century, and today in their place is the ring road that runs along what was the perimeter of the city, which maintains the shape of a "star."

Mirandola was hit by the earthquakes in Emilia in 2012, which caused four fatalities on the outskirts of the city and damaged a good part of the buildings, including the cathedral, the church of San Francesco d'Assisi, the companies of the biomedical district, and various industrial sheds. The earthquake caused enormous damage to the local economy.

Less than a year after the earthquake, the hamlet of San Martino Spino suffered serious damage due to a tornado.

Duchy of Mirandola

Starting in 1310, Mirandola was the capital of the civic lordship of the Pico family, among whom the famous humanist and scientist of the fifteenth century, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, is well known. Mirandola only passed under the Este dominion in 1711. Throughout its history, Mirandola was the subject of two famous sieges, the first in 1510, during the time of Pope Julius II, and the second in 1551 under Julius III.

The decline of the town is also marked by the disaster of a lightning bolt that in 1714 exploded the powder keg and with it a good part of the castle that constituted the palace of the Pico family: the current tower, which overlooks Constituent Square in the center of the city, is largely a twentieth-century reconstruction, which reintegrates the original seventeenth-century portico and the façade of the New Gallery.

Conclusions

In conclusion, if you haven't visited Mirandola yet, I recommend you do so as soon as possible. This city has so much history and culture to offer visitors, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The city has been hit by some unfortunate events, such as the earthquakes and the tornado, but it is still standing and ready to welcome you. I hope you found this summary useful and that it gave you an idea of what to expect in Mirandola.
