Miranda: a Municipality in Molise where History and Nature Meet
Miranda is a small municipality in the province of Isernia, located in the Molise region, with a population of approximately 951 inhabitants. This very ancient municipality has a very interesting history and is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. In this article, we will explore its history, places of interest, demographic evolution, administration, and of course, share some stunning images of the landscape, historical monuments, and local traditions.
History
Miranda is an ancient settlement dating back to the 11th century, and was an important fortified castle that protected the Molise area. The castle, which stands on the "prece" promontory, still shows the Norman facies today, but there are few architectural elements remaining. However, the appearance of this building clearly demonstrates its strategic importance. The original nucleus of the town developed around the castle and, over the centuries, other habitational layers were added.
The Miranda fiefdom underwent many ownership changes among the various noble families of the area, including the Di Somma family, who left a distinctive mark in the history of the town with their family emblem consisting of two towers on a background of sea.
Monuments and Places of Interest
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is one of the main religious buildings of Miranda. Built in 1493, the construction of the facade was only completed around the mid-19th century. Over the years, the facade has undergone two major restoration works, one in 1798 and another in 1919. The inscription above the tympanum recalls the financial contribution of the faithful in the reconstruction of the facade following its modifications.
Another important religious building is the Chapel of Santa Lucia, which is located on the mountains surrounding Miranda. From the chapel, it is possible to admire the panoramic view of the entire Isernia valley. It is said that the Saint took refuge in a cave near the chapel to escape her persecutors. Every last Sunday of August, people go to the church to spend a day of celebration in honor of Santa Lucia.
In 1955, Raffaele Pizzi, a student passionate about archaeology, discovered a stele dating back to the 1st century in a valley near Miranda. The stele, on which four people were depicted, was only recovered in 1968 due to local protests related to superstition. Today it is located in the central square of the town.
Society
Miranda has a population of approximately 951 inhabitants, which has slightly decreased over the years. However, the town has maintained the traditions and customs of the Molise region.
Administration
The administrative management of the town is entrusted to the mayor and his councilors. Miranda is part of the province of Isernia and its territory includes many villages.
