Figino
The neighborhood of Figino: history and origins
Figino is a neighborhood located in the western outskirts of Milan, belonging to the Municipality 7 of Milan. The name derives from the Latin figulinum, which means potter, working with clay. One of the first documents to testify to the existence of Figino dates back to 1017, relating to an exchange of land between a private individual and the Ambrosian Basilica of Milan. Throughout its history, Figino has undergone various changes in the subdivision of the territory and aggregations to neighboring municipalities, until becoming a municipal fraction of Trenno and then being annexed to Milan in 1923.
A neighborhood that preserves the character of a small rural village
Despite being located on the outskirts of Milan, Figino still retains the character of a small rural village today. This makes it a unique case among the neighborhoods of Milan, which are generally located in the built-up area of the city. Figino has not yet been reached by urban expansion and therefore retains a peaceful atmosphere and typical architecture of rural areas.
The Sustainable Village of Figino
In June 2015, the Sustainable Village was inaugurated, a complex of 323 low-impact apartments of various types. It develops along Via Rasario and includes pedestrian areas exclusively, in order to promote pedestrian safety in the narrowest and oldest streets of Figino. This intervention has also allowed for the creation of one-way traffic.
The Fontanili Park
The western end of the Figino territory, on the border with the city of Rho, is affected by the Fontanili Park. It is a natural area rich in springs, which today occupies an area of 125,000 square meters, on a planned surface of 465,000 square meters. The park is intended to connect with the entire western park system of Milan, from Trenno to the urban border.
Transport and infrastructure
Figino was one of the first locations in Milan to be reached by a motorized bus, with a line that connected the village to "Maddalena", now De Angeli Square in Milan. In the past, in the Bettola di Figino area, there was a station of the Milano-Magenta/Castano Primo tramway, also known as Gambadelegn. Currently, the Figino neighborhood is well connected to the center of Milan thanks to several bus lines and the proximity to the Bisceglie subway.
In conclusion, Figino is a quiet neighborhood with a strong focus on the environment, which preserves the character of a small rural village even though it is located on the outskirts of Milan. The presence of the Sustainable Village and Fontanili Park, together with good accessibility by public transport, make it a pleasant and interesting place to visit.
