Mignano Monte Lungo: history and nature in Southern Italy.

History

But let's move on to the historical part! Mignano Monte Lungo is a city with ancient origins. It seems that the Sidicini were the first to populate the area, followed by the Etruscans who founded the city of Cesennia. The control of the city then passed under the Roman Republic, which built defensive walls and a bridge over the Torrente Rava stream.

Over the centuries, Mignano Monte Lungo subsequently came under the control of the Lombards Duchy of Benevento, the County of Capua, the Normans, the Hohenstaufens, the Angevins and the Aragonese. The Castle of Mignano, still present today, was the site of historic battles between enemy armies.

One cannot fail to mention the battle of 1139 which pitted the Normans, led by Roger II of Sicily, against the army of Pope Innocent II. The pope's defeat led to the signing of the Treaty of Mignano, which was signed in the Campanian city.

During the Second World War, Mignano Monte Lungo was the scene of two important battles as part of the Italian Campaign. In 1943, the First Motorized Group of the Royal Army under the command of General Vincenzo Dapino was tasked with participating in the breakthrough of the Volturno Line. The Italians then tried to conquer Monte Lungo but suffered heavy losses and were forced to retreat.

Conclusions

As you have seen, Mignano Monte Lungo is a town rich in history and natural suggestions. Visiting this city means taking a trip back in time, transporting oneself to distant epochs and opening a window onto the history of our country. If you have time, try to plan a stopover in this magical place during your next trip to Italy. You won't regret it!
