In this article, we will take you on a journey to discover this wonderful village, telling you about its geography, history, symbols, monuments, and places of interest.

Miglierina: the authentic Italian village in Calabria.

Physical Geography

Territory

Located in the heart of the isthmus of Catanzaro, Miglierina is situated on the State Road 280 of the Two Seas, which connects Catanzaro to Lamezia Terme. The village is located at an altitude of 575 m and extends over an area of only 13 km², reaching a height of 1039 m at Mount Portella.

History

The history of Miglierina is linked to that of the town of Tiriolo, where its hamlet was located. Founded in the sixteenth century by some poor peasant and shepherd families from Scigliano, Miglierina was a fief of the Carafa of Nocera and then of the Cigala princes until the fall of the feudal regime in 1806, when it became a municipality. The name of the village probably derives from the Calabrian dialect term "migliarina", indicating a herbaceous plant that damaged millet.

Symbols

The emblem of Miglierina, granted in 1983, depicts a shield divided in half: on one side, three ears of corn tied with a red ribbon, on the other, pebbles, surmounted by a crown and surrounded by two branches of laurel and oak. The municipal banner, on the other hand, is divided in yellow and blue.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Miglierina is rich in historical and environmental monuments that are worth a visit.

Civil Architecture

Among the most interesting buildings, we mention Palazzo Granato, Palazzo Barberio, Casa Marsico, and Casa Arcuri. All these houses bear witness to the typical architectural style of the Calabrian territory.

Religious Architecture

Miglierina boasts two churches, the Church of S. Lucia and the Church of the Rosary. Both feature a simple and sober architecture, typical of countryside churches.

Work Architecture

Among the places of interest in Miglierina, we cannot fail to mention the mill, located in the locality of Corvo, which testifies to the importance that cereal processing had in the past.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Miglierina deserves to be visited not only for its history but also for the beauty of its monuments and its geographical location, between mountains and sea. If you love authentic villages and Calabrian tradition, you cannot miss the opportunity to discover this small jewel of the province of Catanzaro.
