Miglianico

Discovering Miglianico: a small Abruzzo gem

If you're a travel enthusiast and have decided to explore a lesser-known corner of Abruzzo, then Miglianico is the perfect place for you. With its population of 4640, this municipality in the province of Chieti is the right place for history and nature lovers alike.

History and Origins

The foundation of this town dates back to the last century of the High Middle Ages, although the first mention of the toponym "Mellianum" is from the 12th century. According to the linguist Prof. Marcello de Giovanni, the name of the town derives from the Latin name "Aemilius" with the suffix "-anicus" indicating possession. The history of Miglianico is linked to the fortified castle in the village, around which the settlement developed. In the past it belonged to the Counts of Chieti and the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. During the Norman era, the castle was an important military stronghold defending the Foro, while in the 14th century the town was owned by the Orsini family and in the 18th century by the Valignani family of Chieti. Later, it was owned by the Todeschi family of Pianella until its incorporation into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

World War II

Like many other Italian cities, Miglianico also suffered the consequences of World War II. In 1943, the town was occupied by the Germans and the military garrison was the Masci Castle and the Town Hall. The Nazis rounded up men to complete the fortification works of the defensive lines, but some young volunteers, along with those from Francavilla, formed a group of patriots to rebel against the German presence. The group was led by Rocco Angelucci and was disbanded in December 1943 due to a scarcity of weapons and poor military organization. However, this represents the first serious attempt by citizens to rebel against the oppressor, prior to the establishment in January 1944 of the Maiella Brigade by Ettore Troilo.
