A brief foray into history
Miasino has ancient origins and was part of the great episcopal fiefdom of the Riviera di San Giulio during the Middle Ages. The name of the fiefdom comes from the evangelizer of the area, San Giulio, who lived in the 4th century. During the 17th century, the town was enriched with beautiful palaces, including the Church of San Rocco, rebuilt in 1627 on the project of the Milanese architect Francesco Maria Richino. The interior of the church is richly decorated with Baroque and late-Baroque works, created by both local and "foreign" artists. The dedication to San Rocco is due to the plague epidemics that hit the area, mostly coming from Milan.
Architectural beauties not to be missed
Miasino boasts numerous architectural attractions of great artistic value. One of the most significant examples is Villa Nigra, of 16th-century origins and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today the villa is owned by the Municipality. The name derives from the last private owners, one of whom was also the architect Carlo Nigra.
