Miagliano

Hello, Miagliano!

Miagliano is a beautiful municipality in Piedmont, in the province of Biella, with only 546 inhabitants. It is the smallest municipality in northern Italy and is among the last in Italy in terms of area.

Discovering the Geography of Miagliano

The municipal territory is located on the right hydrographic side of the Cervo stream, where the minimum altitude is just under 520 meters at the southern end of the municipality. The highest point in Miagliano is just over 600 meters above sea level. The size of the municipality is also due to the fact that it does not have administrative facilities in the grazing areas of the high valley, unlike other centers in Biella. Classified as zone 4, Miagliano has very low seismicity.

Miagliano, the smallest municipality in Northern Italy: geography, history, and culture.

The History of Miagliano

Miagliano obtained administrative autonomy in the mid-13th century, even before religious autonomy was granted in 1779. However, this situation was an exception compared to other municipalities in the area, where the path was reversed. A sad event in the history of Miagliano occurred on August 17, 1471, when Giovanna de Monduro was burned at the stake for witchcraft. The village was also a center of textile industrial activities thanks to the Poma brothers, originally from Zumaglia, who built a workers' village and many services aimed at their workforce.

In 1929, the village was incorporated into the municipality of Andorno with Tavigliano, Sagliano Micca, and San Giuseppe di Casto, but after the end of the fascist regime, Miagliano regained its municipal autonomy.

Symbols of Miagliano

The coat of arms, flag, and standard were granted by specific decrees.

Places of Interest

One of the main attractions of the village is the Parish Church of Sant'Antonio Abate. Established as a parish in 1779, the church was previously dependent on the parish of Andorno Micca.

Miagliano is a welcoming and historic municipality worth visiting to understand its uniqueness and beauty. With its landscapes and attractions, the municipality offers an authentic cultural experience. Thanks to its geography, history, and culture, this municipality has much to offer for those who want to discover the heart of the Piedmont region.
