Mezzolombardo
Welcome to Mezzolombardo, the gem of Piana Rotaliana
If you're planning a visit to the autonomous province of Trento, don't miss Mezzolombardo. This Italian town of 7,442 residents is located in the beautiful Piana Rotaliana, at the foot of the rocky cliffs of Mount Fausior. Let's discover more about this charming place.
A unique and picturesque territory
Mezzolombardo is embraced by the course of the Noce river and has an old settlement in a slightly elevated position, called Piaz. This area is crossed by picturesque alleys that make it the most characteristic part of the old village.
History of Mezzolombardo
The territory of Mezzolombardo directly belonged to the Episcopal Principality of Trento. In 1194 it was divided from Mezzocorona, part of the territory of the Counts of Tyrol. From this moment, it was named Mezzolombardo, while the neighboring town was called Mezzotedesco. In the past, the toponym "Mezzo di San Pietro," from the name of the castle, was also used.
Monuments and places of interest
If you're passionate about art and architecture, you can't miss the numerous churches in Mezzolombardo. The most important is the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, built between 1846 and 1849 to replace the previous seventeenth-century church. Other churches include the Church of St. Peter, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Church of the Addolorata, the Church of Our Lady of Grace, and the Church of St. Apollonia, a private chapel in the complex of the Tower Castle.
To the northwest of Mezzolombardo, there is the locality of Rocchetta, where the remains of the homonymous Forte Rocchetta, an Austro-Hungarian fortification, can be found. To the south of Mezzolombardo, there is the locality of Rupe, which is the industrial part of the town, where various factories and companies are located. In the same locality, there is the biotope La Rupe, which extends, always in a southerly direction, towards the town of Zambana.
Demographic evolution
Mezzolombardo has seen a constant increase in population over the years, from 7,167 inhabitants in 2001 to 7,442 inhabitants in 2021.
Infrastructure and transportation
The Trento-Malé-Mezzana railway passes through the municipal area, and the Mezzolombardo station is located near the town center. This line was inaugurated in 1964 to replace the pre-existing Trento-Malé tramway. The municipal territory is also well-connected to the provincial road network.

Mezzolombardo is a unique and picturesque place, rich in history and culture, that certainly deserves a visit. Don't miss the opportunity to discover this gem of Piana Rotaliana and admire the beauty and art hidden in its churches and monuments.
