Welcome to Sorbolo: a brief journey through the city
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sorbolo, a town in the province of Parma that has recently merged with the town of Mezzani to form the new municipality of Sorbolo Mezzani.
Physical geography
Sorbolo is located 12 km from the capital city of Parma and is crossed by the state road 62 della Cisa. Its territory is crossed by the Enza river, which forms the border between the province of Parma and the province of Reggio Emilia. Sorbolo is part of the area of the province called Bassa parmense.
Hydrography
Sorbolo is crossed by numerous artificial canals, such as the Gambalone, Canalazzo Terrieri, Fumolenta and Parmetta canals, which are left tributaries of the Enza. Monitored by the competent basin authority, River Po District Basin Authority, these waterways create a very picturesque natural setting.
Origins of the name
The name Sorbolo has Latin origins and is derived from the Latin word "Sorbus". In ancient times, the sorb tree was widespread in the area, but today it is less common and protected as an ancient autochthonous fruit tree.
History
The oldest traces of human settlement in the territory of Sorbolo date back to the protohistoric period of the terramare. Sorbolo became part of the Roman Empire with the dedication of the colony of Parma in 183 BC. The territory was centuriated into agricultural properties with a rustic villa where iron and bronze objects were also produced. Sorbolo was the meeting point for communications between Parma and the important Roman center of Brixellum.
Sorbolo today
Sorbolo is a city rich in history and traditions. After centuries of reclamation, the city is now an important productive hub, thanks to its numerous agricultural and industrial activities. The area of Ramoscello and Pedrignano in the municipality of Parma still preserves much of the Roman centuriation. This means that the city has a very interesting historical and archaeological heritage.
