Physical geography

Gesso is located along a ridge of the Peloritani mountains, in an agricultural area at an altitude of 265 meters above sea level. It is only 3 km from the nearby town of Villafranca Tirrena and is part of the Messina districts. The suburb enjoys a breathtaking view that spans over several places including Etna, Vulcano Island, Stromboli Island and Cape Milazzo. History

Gesso has ancient origins dating back before the arrival of the Normans. However, its oldest buildings are churches and convents, built after the Council of Trent. Among these we find the seventeenth-century parish church of Sant'Antonio abate, the convent of San Francesco da Paola, the Capuchin monastery with the attached church of the Immaculate. Before these, there were also two Basilian monasteries, San Gregorio and San Biagio, perhaps even San Nicola and the Badia, a female monastery.

Demographic evolution

At the 2001 census, the suburb had 780 inhabitants. At the 2011 census, however, the population has decreased to 549 residents, 258 males and 291 females. Despite not being a large city, Gesso has a strong and united community.
