Mentana has a very interesting history. The settlement developed from the 8th century onwards after the abandonment of the ancient Nomentum. Throughout history, the city underwent occupations and changes of ownership. For example, in 1058 Mentana was destroyed by the Normans but was later rebuilt. In 1798 Mentana was admitted to the Roman Republic of Napoleon I, but it was only in 1867 that the city became the scene of the famous Battle of Mentana.
