Menaggio

Welcome to Menaggio!

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Menaggio, a town located on the western shore of Lake Como in Lombardy. With its 3083 inhabitants and its three hamlets (Croce, Loveno and Nobiallo), Menaggio is a highly appreciated tourist destination for its natural beauty and its millennial history.

Origin of the name

The name Menaggio has very ancient origins, and in fact its presence can already be found in medieval documents. Actually, the etymological origins of the toponym are still debated among historians. While some think that the name derives from a Latin inscription found in Santa Maria Rezzonico and referable to the Roman official Lucius Minicius Exoratus, others link it to the Indo-European roots "Men-" ("mountain") and "uigg" ("water") of Celtic origin.

Menaggio: history, tourist attractions, and typical dishes.

History

The territory of Menaggio was originally inhabited by the ancient Ligurian people of Europe, and later saw the influences of the Celtic populations. In Roman times, Menaggio was crossed by the Regina road, which connected the river port of Cremona with Chiavenna, passing through Milan. Nowadays, some remnants of Roman tombs and inscriptions are still visible.

With the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Menaggio was first invaded by the Goths, and then by the Byzantine Empire and the Lombards, who built a signalling tower on its territory.

In 386, the Diocese of Como was founded, of which Menaggio became the head of the Pieve of Menaggio, and the Church of Santo Stefano in the area became an important place of worship, with a baptistery dedicated to St. John along the lake shore.
