History

Origins

According to historical documents, the origin of the name Melìto could derive from the ancient Mellano. Frederick II of Swabia declared it a hamlet of Naples along with other surrounding villages.

The moat of Naples

The name Mellito, which in Vulgar Latin meant "deep ditch," could be derived from the moat of Naples that in the past divided the territory of Naples from that of the Principality of Capua. Melìto di Napoli was a fiefdom of various aristocratic families, including the Colonna.

In 1806, the Laws of the abolition of feudalism were enacted, which decreed the end of all feudal privileges in the Kingdom of Naples and the start of the Municipal Administration.
