Melissano
Welcome to Melissano!
Hello everyone! Today I'm going to introduce you to a hidden gem in Salento: Melissano! This Italian municipality has a population of about 6,800 and is located in the province of Lecce, in Puglia.
A Flat and Karstic Area
Melissano is a completely flat area that extends between 46 and 59 meters above sea level. It is located on the western slope of the lower Salento and is part of the Melissano limestone substrate. The karstic nature of the territory promotes the creation of long underground rivers that feed the aquifers. Sometimes, the emergence of the surface water table forms small bodies of water, such as Lake Cellini in the northern part of the municipality.
City of Italy
Since 2003, Melissano has held the title of City of Italy and represents a strategic point in the wine and table grape industry. It is also part of the Casarano footwear district, confirming its position as a dynamic and productive city.
The climate
Melissano enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. The average temperature of the coldest month, January, is around 9 degrees Celsius, while that of the hottest month, August, is 25.1 degrees Celsius. The average annual precipitation is around 676 mm, with a peak in autumn-winter and a minimum in spring-summer. In addition, the municipalities in the area are weakly affected by western currents thanks to the protection provided by the Salentine ridges which create a shield system.
The origin of the name
The toponym Melissano has several possible origins. It could derive from the fact that the Melissa officinalis, a plant highly sought after by bees, was cultivated on the territory. Other studies suggest that the name derives from the Latin Melissus with the addition of the suffix -anus, indicating possession. Finally, there is also the hypothesis that the city was named Melissano in honor of the Byzantine general Melissos, who fought with Emperor Basil I against the emir of Bari.
Conclusions
Melissano is a city of great historical, cultural and geographic value. Its flat and karstic territory, mild climate and strategic position in the wine and footwear industry make it a fascinating place rich in traditions. Come and discover Melissano and the beautiful land of Salento!
