Let's discover together the province of Crotone
Hello everyone! Today I'm talking about the province of Crotone, a wonderful area located in the Calabria region of Italy, with a population of 160,638 and covering an area of over 1,715 km². The province was established in 1992, along with the province of Vibo Valentia, by dividing the territory previously included in the province of Catanzaro.
The history of the province
The creation of a new province, separated from Catanzaro, was first proposed in 1957. Later, in 1989, twenty-seven mayors formulated a new request for the establishment of the entity with Crotone as its capital. Finally, in 1992, the request was definitively approved and the province became operational in 1995, through the Administrative Elections in Italy.
The symbols of the province
The provincial coat of arms has a blazon composed of various elements that represent the history, culture, and geography of the province.
The geography of the province
The province of Crotone extends eastward to the Ionian Sea and borders the province of Cosenza to the northwest and the province of Catanzaro to the southwest. Its territory extends from the coast to the mountains of Sila, offering a wide range of splendid natural landscapes.
Among the most famous tourist destinations are Le Castella, where the famous Le Castella castle stands in the middle of the sea, and Punta Alice, which regularly receives the Blue Flag for its clean sea. Also, a recommended cultural destination is Capo Colonna.
In the mountains, the frequent locality is Trepidò where the Palumbo Village and Pino Grande Village in the municipality of Savelli in Sila stand. In the Sila territory, at the border of the province of Catanzaro, there are the mountains of Monte Giove, Monte Femminamorta, and part of Monte Gariglione. The municipalities of Mesoraca and Petilia Policastro are rich in biodiversity and botany and include Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe, two typically mountain villages.
The Arbëreshë community
The Arbëreshë community also resides in the provincial territory, a small community that fluently speaks the Arbëreshë language, an Albanian dialect, and Italian. The Arbëreshë community mainly resides in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto, and Carfizzi, where you can discover the roots and traditions of the community, and admire their architecture and cultural heritage.
In conclusion, the province of Crotone is an ideal destination for those who love to immerse themselves in the culture and nature of southern Italy. There are so many things to discover and appreciate, and you will certainly not be disappointed!
