Meduna di Livenza

Hello, let me introduce you to Meduna di Livenza!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about a very unique commune in the province of Treviso, in Veneto: Meduna di Livenza! With its 2937 inhabitants, this beautiful place is located on the left bank of the Livenza river and is the only commune in the province that has expanded completely on this side of the river.

The physical geography of Meduna di Livenza

As you can imagine, Meduna di Livenza is characterized by its waterways. In addition to the Livenza, which gives it its name, there are also the rivers Fiume and Sile that converge right into the Livenza, forming a beautiful view. There are also artificial canals such as the Postumia, already known as the Canale dei Molini, and the Nuovo Canale Corella, created for reclamation.

Meduna di Livenza: history, nature, and relaxation in Veneto.

Meduna di Livenza over the course of history

But let's talk a bit about history! We know that various testimonies tell us that already in Roman times there was a presence here, probably thanks to the passage of the via Postumia. In Mure and Cortabbà numerous finds have been discovered such as bricks, marble remains, and fibulae. Furthermore, in Brische a coin of Marcus Aurelius was found!

Meduna di Livenza, like many other communes in the area, was included in the Patria del Friuli after the year 1000. In the eleventh century, in fact, this territory was officially established and Meduna di Livenza, located on its borders along the left bank of the Livenza, became the seat of a fortification.

The first mention of the castle and the village dates back to 1223 in a dispute between the patriarch and the abbot of the abbey of Sesto al Reghena. Subsequently, other villages were placed under the Meduna territory, including locations in today's communes of Pasiano di Pordenone, Cinto Caomaggiore, Annone Veneto, Pramaggiore, and Portogruaro, all the way up to the Reghena river.

The arrival of the Serenissima, in the first half of the fifteenth century, ended the temporal power of the Patriarch of Aquileia but local forms of government were preserved.
