Meana Sardo

Welcome to Meana Sardo

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Meana Sardo, a small town in the province of Nuoro, in Sardinia. With a population of 1593 inhabitants, this peaceful town is located in the region of Barbagia di Belvì. The name Meana comes from the word "mediana" because the territory of the town was crossed by the Roman road that from Cagliari, passing through Bhiora (Serri), Valenza (Nuragus), Mediana (Meana Sardo), Augustis (Austis), Sorabile (near Fonni) and Caput Tirsi, reached Olbia.

An ancient history

The Meana Sardo area has been inhabited since the Nuragic and Roman era, as demonstrated by the presence of nuraghi, necropolises and oppida in the territory. During the medieval period, Meana belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea and was part of the curatory of Barbagia di Meana. Later, it was incorporated into the lordship of Barbagia di Belvì. After being ruled by various feudal lords, it was redeemed in 1839, with the abolition of the feudal system.

At the center of the coat of arms of the town of Meana Sardo is depicted the nuraghe Nolza, an ancient fortress now in ruins, built on a green hill from which a small spring of water flows. In the left corner of the head, there are an ear of wheat and a branch with berries, all depicted in their natural state.

Monuments and places of interest

The Church of San Bartolomeo is the most important religious building in Meana Sardo. Built in 1589, it has a structure with three aisles flanked by seven chapels and a square presbytery. The Church of Sant'Antonio, restored in 1962, is a small church located in the homonymous neighborhood and is only used occasionally. The Church of San Salvatore has been renovated several times over the centuries, to the point where its original structure from the 15th century cannot be traced. The Church of San Francesco is the most recent, built at the beginning of the 20th century using materials from the ancient church dedicated to St. Francis.
