Meana di Susa

Meana di Susa: a journey through history and nature

History:

Meana di Susa has an ancient history and is linked to the Roman presence in the area. In fact, a necropolis from the 1st-2nd century A.D. was discovered here. The religious community of San Costanzo and Santa Maria are among the first mentioned in the bishop Cuniberto's bull dated 1065. Meana also hosted a Waldensian community from the 14th to the 18th century.

Among the curiosities of the area, devotion to San Costanzo is still very strong and there is a particular ritual, the "dance of the branches", which takes place during the patron saint festival in September. The Combe tower, on the other hand, was probably built for communication purposes via bonfires.

Physical Geography:

Meana di Susa is located in the lower Susa Valley and is part of the Susa and Val Sangone Mountain Community. It has an area of 13.48 km² and is divided into 21 hamlets. The town is reachable from the road of the Colle delle Finestre and from the road to Frais, a small ski resort in the municipality of Chiomonte. The Meana station for the metropolitan railway service of Turin is located on the Turin-Modane line. It is 15 km away from Susa and 54 km from Turin.

Society:

In the last hundred years, the resident population has decreased by 50%. According to ISTAT data from 2009, the foreign population represents only 1.52%, mainly of Romanian nationality.

A summary table of the administrations that have succeeded in the municipality shows the administrative continuity of the town over the years.
