Hi friends, today I'm going to talk about Turin, a wonderful city located in the Italian region of Piedmont. With a population of 842,472 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2022), Turin is the fourth largest municipality in Italy and the heart of the Turin metropolitan area which has about 1.7 million inhabitants.

Global Status

Turin is one of the major hubs of universities, art, tourism, science, and culture in Italy and boasts a prominent position in the country's industrial economy, along with Milan and Genoa, forming the famous Italian industrial triangle. Turin is also home to important cultural and sporting events such as the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, the 2021-2025 ATP Finals, and the 2006 Winter Olympics.

History

Foundation of the City

Turin has a two thousand year history, founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC.

Capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy

After being the capital of an important Duchy of Turin and a March of Turin, the city passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy in 1563 and from 1720 it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 19th century, the kingdom would lead to the Risorgimento and make Turin the first capital of the newborn Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Territory

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po, which runs through the city from south to north, facing several alpine valleys, including the Val di Susa and the Valli di Lanzo.

UNESCO Heritage Sites

Turin boasts several areas and palaces included in two UNESCO protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy Residences in Piedmont and the Po Hills area, a biosphere reserve.

Industry

Typical Products

The city is famous for some of its typical products such as vermouth, Gianduiotto chocolate, breadsticks, and espresso coffee. Turin is also the hub of Italian automotive industry and an important center for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, food and wine, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.
