A bit of history about Mazzarino

The name Mazzarino derives from the toponym "Maktorion," an Hellenized indigenous center mentioned by Herodotus (VII, 53) and which has been identified with the remains that were found near Monte Bubbonia, in the territory of Mazzarino, excavated by Paolo Orsi in the early twentieth century.

The current center was formed in the Middle Ages, in the vicinity of a Castle of Mazzarino built between the 11th and 14th centuries of which only a few remains remain today. In 1143, Aleramici Manfredo del Vasto became the first Count of Mazzarino.

Subsequently, the lordship of Mazzarino passed to the Branciforte family, of Piacenza origin. The County of Mazzarino was founded thanks to the marriage between Graziana Villanova Palmerio and Raffaele Branciforte. The Branciforte family had the County of Mazzarino until the abolition of feudalism in the Kingdom of Sicily in 1812.

Finally, in 1818, Mazzarino became part of the province of Caltanissetta.

The County of Mazzarino

The city of Mazzarino between the 16th and 19th centuries was the capital of a feudal state called the County of Mazzarino and Grassuliato, simply known as the County of Mazzarino. The Principi di Butera became extinct in the mid-19th century, with the last heir of the house, Stefania Branciforte Branciforte, and as a consequence all the titles and property of the Branciforte family, including the title of Count of Mazzarino and Grassuliato, passed to the Lanza family.
