Economy and Culture

The Industrial Triangle and Industrial Production

Turin is famous for being one of Italy's three most important industrial poles along with Milan and Genoa; together they formed the famous Industrial Triangle during the period of the Italian Economic Miracle. Today, it is still an important center for Italian automobile industry and information technology. Not just industrial production, this city also hosts important publishing, banking, insurance, and fashion companies.

Turin: between culture, economy and history.

Art and University

Turin also resonates with art, culture, and university. Here, you can find important museums, such as the Egyptian Museum, which contains the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world, the National Museum of Cinema, the Giovanni and Marella Agnelli Pinacoteca, and the modern Lavazza Museum. It has a strong presence of universities, including the University of Turin, the Polytechnic University of Turin, the European Institute of Design, and many others.

Sports and Entertainment

Turin can also boast of having organized important sports events such as the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006 and, in 2021, the ATP finals. In 2022, Turin hosted the Eurovision Song Contest and demonstrated its vibrant cultural scene.

History

Foundation of Turin

Turin has a two-thousand-year history; it was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic tribe, then transformed into a Roman colony in the 1st century BC by the emperor Augustus.

Capitals and Dukedoms

After being the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, it passed to the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, and from 1720, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia until its merger with the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Exhibitions and Events

In 1911, the city hosted the International Exhibition, decreeing its importance in the world. It has continued to host internationally important events such as the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022.

Geography

Territory

Turin extends into the plain bordered by rivers such as the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The latter crosses the city from south to north. Turin is also a gateway to Alpine valleys such as the Val di Susa, which connects the city to neighboring France through the Frejus Tunnel.

Turin can be proud of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Savoy Residences in Piedmont and the Po Hills area. Turin has become a global city internationally and will never stop surprising and fascinating. Come and visit it!
