Massimino: history and beauties of a Ligurian municipality.

History

The history of Massimino dates back to 967, when the village was within the boundaries of the Aleramici. Over time, the municipality changed several feudal lords, until it came under the ownership of the Del Carretto family in the 13th century. Later, the fiefdom passed to the Marchesato del Monferrato and then, in 1713, was purchased by the Republic of Genoa for its strategic position of control over the border from and to the Lower Piedmont.

During the French domination, Massimino was part of the Letimbro Department and then the Montenotte Department, when the area was annexed to the First French Empire. In 1815, the municipality was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, as established by the Congress of Vienna in 1814, and since 1927 has been part of the province of Savona.

What to see

If you visit Massimino, do not miss the opportunity to discover the beautiful village of San Vincenzo, where the municipal headquarters is located. Here you can admire numerous historical buildings, including the Church of San Vincenzo, dating back to the 11th century. The church features precious works of art, such as frescoes and paintings, which testify to the great religious importance of Massimino throughout history.

The other place to visit in Massimino is the Castle of Massimino, located on the top of a hill, near the village of San Vincenzo. The castle, dating back to the 15th century, features several towers and defensive walls, which make it a unique architectural work of art. Today the castle is privately owned, but can be admired from the outside.

Like many municipalities in Liguria, Massimino is also famous for its festivals and traditions. The most important festival is certainly that of San Vincenzo, the patron saint of the municipality, which falls on January 22nd. On this occasion, the village comes alive with colors, sounds, and flavors, with numerous musical performances and tastings of typical products.
