During the Middle Ages, this territory was at the center of numerous disputes between the cities of Fermo and Ascoli. In 1567, the municipality was freed from the jurisdiction of Fermo and became immediately dependent on the Holy See. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Massignano experienced a period of peace and tranquility, interrupted only by the arrival of French troops. Since 1861, with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, Massignano became part of the new nation.
