Massarosa

Welcome to Massarosa: a nature oasis between lake and hills

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Massarosa, a charming Tuscan town located in the province of Lucca, just steps away from the beaches of Versilia.

Physical geography, landscape and fauna

Massarosa is a true treasure of nature, where the lake environment merges with the hilly landscape. The town center overlooks Lake Massaciuccoli, a large depression that houses an extraordinary flora and fauna. In particular, the Chiarone Nature Reserve is the ideal place to admire the biodiversity of the wetland and protect the species that populate it. Here it is easy to spot the grey heron, the little egret, and the great white egret, but also the rare bittern.

The lake is also an important stop for enthusiastic birdwatchers, who can admire the spectacle of various bird species that inhabit the area. From the bittern to the terns, passing by the impressive osprey, which flies majestically on the high-voltage poles.

But Massarosa is not just a lake. The hills of the town offer wonderful hiking routes and dreamy panoramas. Here, among the olive groves and cultivated fields, it is possible to traverse the route on stilts surrounded by lotus plantations, along the wet strip that connects the Massarosa-Bozzano station and the hamlet of Massarosa.

Economic activities and tourism

Massarosa is not only nature but also a territory rich in economic and cultural activities. There are wine, olive-growing, and cereal-growing companies that offer high-quality products typical of the area.

The area of Montramito, on the border with Viareggio, is home to large manufacturing, shipbuilding, and advanced technology companies, which constitute the Montramito Consortium.

From a tourist point of view, Massarosa is an oasis of peace. In addition to excursions in the greenery, there is the possibility to visit the San Martino church, dating back to 1100, a place of worship that houses a precious 15th-century fresco, and the Micheli Palace, which preserves remains of frescoes dating back to the 16th century.

Events and traditions

Massarosa, finally, is also a land of events and traditions. The Fagiolata ritual is certainly one of the most important appointments. It is a popular festival held every year, on the last Sunday of August, to honor the typical product of the area: the Sorana beans. On this day, the streets of the historic center fill with stalls and music, offering a real party for all visitors passing through Massarosa.

In short, Massarosa definitely deserves a visit. A town that houses a unique natural and cultural heritage, ideal for those looking for peace, fun, and lots of greenery. Come and visit us!
