Marzano Appio is an Italian town in the province of Caserta, situated 300 meters above sea level at the foot of the Roccamonfina volcano. The town, composed of several hamlets, has a population of around 1976 inhabitants.

Physical geography

The territory of Marzano Appio is characterized by extensive chestnut forests and volcanic reliefs. The town is part of the Roccamonfina-Foce Garigliano Regional Park and the Monte Santa Croce Mountain Community. Furthermore, Marzano Appio is crossed by the A1 motorway and the SS6 Via Casilina.

Marzano Appio boasts several monuments and places of interest, including the Castello di Terracorpo, the Church of Carmine with its fresco in the Vallecupa locality, the Corree Lake, the Parish of San Sebastiano, the Piazzetta Norma Di Sandro (dedicated to the smallest victim of the Italian steamship Andrea Doria shipwreck) and the funeral chapel in the San Bernardino Cemetery.

Marzano Appio has seen a constant population growth until the 1970s, when it reached its historical peak. Subsequently, the population has been decreasing, but in recent years there has been a demographic increase.

Traditions and folklore

Most of the festivities in Marzano Appio take place in the summer. The festival of Antonio di Padova, which takes place every year in the second half of August, is the main one in the town and includes the pyrotechnic show of the Campanile Fire. A deeply-rooted tradition in Marzano Appio is also the San Giacomo fair, which takes place on July 25th and 26th and sees the sale of typical local products.
