Marzano
Marzano: a town with an ancient and interesting history
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Marzano, a municipality in the province of Pavia in Lombardy, which has a very interesting history. The town is located in eastern Pavese, near the southern Lambro river.
History
Marzano has Roman origins and recent excavations have uncovered parts of a large residential productive villa. This villa also included private baths, a real luxury for the time. The current town dates back to the High Middle Ages and is mentioned in documents from the 11th and 12th centuries. It was part of the property of the San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro monastery in Pavia. In ancient times, the toponym appeared in documents as ''Marcianum'' or ''Marciano''. In the past, Marzano was part of the ''Campagna Sottana'' of Pavia and belonged to the County of Belgioioso until the abolition of feudalism (1797). In 1872, the town of Marzano merged with the suppressed municipalities of Castel Lambro and Spirago.
Castel Lambro: This municipality (Cadastral code C131) was located opposite Marzano, beyond the Lambro river. Castel Lambro is mentioned as ''Castellum Lambi'' in 1164 in the diploma with which Frederick Barbarossa granted jurisdiction over Oltrepò Pavese, Lomellina and some localities of Pavese that perhaps did not belong to Pavia’s domain from ancient times. Castel Lambro did not remain in Pavia for long, in fact, it was included in the Pieve di San Giuliano Milanese, belonging to the Province of the Duchy of Milan and only in 1786 was included in the Province of Pavia. It was a fiefdom of the ancient Arese family of Milan, counts from Castel Lambro since the 17th century, and passed by marriage in 1676 to the Visconti Borromeo Arese. In 1872, the municipality of Castel Lambro merged with Marzano.
Spirago: This municipality (Cadastral code I918) has been known since the 11th century as ''Spiraco''. It was part of the ''Campagna Sottana'' of Pavia, and like Marzano, it was enfeoffed to the Barbiano of Belgioioso as early as 1431. In 1872, the municipality of Spirago merged with Marzano.
Cassina Bianca: This rural locality merged into what was then the municipality of Spirago in 1840.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the banner of Marzano were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on October 4, 1984. The coat of arms replicates an emblem found within the ''Stemmario Marco Cremosano'', dating back to 1680. The banner, on the other hand, is a white cloth.
Society
Marzano's population has steadily grown over the years. Currently, the town has 1682 residents.
Administration
Marzano’s administration is highly efficient and appreciated by the local population.
