Origin of the name
The name Maerne originates from the Latin "maternu", which means "inherited from the mother". This reference was related to a property.
History and monuments
Through its monuments and history, Maerne combines tradition with modernity.
History
Maerne has a history that dates back at least to 1026, when a document refers to some land donations made to the Church of Santa Marta in Venice. In 1177, the name of Maerne appears in a list of notable people who swore allegiance to the Diocese of Treviso. At that time, Maerne had defensive works along the road to Chiesa, and this place was known as "Contrà di Torre". The church of Maerne dates back to 1220 and was built as a parish church, under the jurisdiction of the church of Martellago.
Over the centuries, Maerne underwent numerous political changes, such as subjection to Mestre and then, from 1337, the return under the dominion of the Serenissima Republic. In 1805, Maerne became the capital of the municipality, which also included Martellago.
Monuments
The archpriest church of San Pietro, built in 1851 in neo-Gothic style, is the main attraction of Maerne. It houses some works of art such as paintings by Antonio Beni. The "Barchessa dei Querini Stampalia" is the last trace of an ancient holiday residence of the Querini Stampalia. Although currently abandoned, this building maintains the suggestive majesty typical of Venetian villas.
Other monuments of Maerne include Palazzo Verdi, Pavanello, Casa Carraro, Rustico di Ca' Bembo, Barchessa di villa Silvestri and Villa Avogadro degli Azzoni.
Natural areas
Maerne is located near the Parco dei Laghetti, a large green area of 54 hectares managed by the municipality and WWF which represents an excellent destination for a pleasant walk.
Conclusions
Maerne offers a combination of history, culture, architecture, and nature. Its geographical location and proximity to the cities of Venice and Treviso make this location an excellent choice for those who want to spend a pleasant day outdoors. The archpriest church of San Pietro, with its neo-Gothic architecture, definitely deserves a visit, as does the "Barchessa dei Querini Stampalia" that preserves some of the local history. In addition, the Parco dei Laghetti offers a long ecological path for nature lovers.
