Spina
Discovering Spina
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Spina, a charming hamlet located in the Province of Perugia.
History
Spina has an ancient and interesting history, which begins with an Etruscan settlement, probably abandoned, but mentioned in a diploma of 1163 by Frederick Barbarossa. The village was assigned to the Perugian district of Porta Eburnea in 1260, but underwent numerous vicissitudes over the centuries, including sieges by Henry VII of Luxembourg and Braccio da Montone. In 1879, a Mutual Aid Workers' Society was founded, managed by the inhabitants of the village, and from that moment on Spina began to expand even beyond the city walls.
Economy
Throughout the years, Spina has been known primarily for the skill of its carpenters and carvers, butchers and blacksmiths, and for the brick industry. But an important cultural heritage of the village is also the Giuseppe Verdi Philharmonic, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2007.
Monuments and artworks
Spina is rich in monuments and works of art, such as the fortified medieval village, mainly made of brick and with two circular towers, one of which is still in excellent condition. The parish church of San Nicolò is also an interesting place to visit, particularly for the mortal remains of S. Faustino martyr, transferred to the church in 1646 from the church of S. Pietro. The chapel of Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the 15th century and rebuilt in 1757, is another noteworthy place in Spina, with a coeval fresco by an unknown author.
Conclusion
In short, if you are in the area and want to discover a place rich in history and art, don't miss a visit to Spina!
