Sant'elena

Welcome to Sant'Elena!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sant'Elena, a small and quiet village in the municipality of Marsciano, in the province of Perugia. Located at the top of a hill at an altitude of 304 meters, it is located near the state road 317 ''Marscianese'', between the villages of San Valentino della Collina and Cerqueto. The village has only 39 residents, but it is a place rich in history, art, and nature. I will show you everything there is to know about the history of Sant'Elena, its monuments and places of art, the sports practiced in the area, and its economy.

History

Sant'Elena is a very ancient village, known as ''Sant'Ellera'' (which in the local dialect means ivy) and first mentioned in a document from 1280, which speaks of the granting of some goods by the Municipality of Perugia to the Silvestrine Benedictine Congregation monks. Over the centuries, the village has been the subject of attacks and raids, including the imperial army of Henry VII of Luxembourg in 1312. In 1492, the Municipality of Perugia financed the construction of a well to provide drinking water to the inhabitants, and in 1639, the castle was damaged by the collapse of much of the walls not continuously maintained. The castle of Sant'Elena was owned by the Sansoni family, whose coats of arms still appear in many objects and documents.

Economy

The economy of Sant'Elena revolves mainly around agriculture and livestock, with particular emphasis on the cultivation of the vine. In past years, Sant'Elena hosted the ''Festa dell'Uva'' (Grape Festival) every September, which has become an important local event.

Monuments and places of art

Sant'Elena is a place rich in monuments and places of art, including the Castle of Sant'Elena, dating back to the fourteenth century, but now incorporated into the private houses of the village. Of the four original towers of the castle, only one remains, but the walls and inner courtyard are still in good condition.

Sports

Sports are very important in this small village and there is a football field and a tennis court available. It is the perfect place to practice outdoor sports and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
