Pieve Caina
Pieve Caina: a small village near Perugia
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Pieve Caina, a small hamlet in the municipality of Marsciano, in the province of Perugia. It is a beautiful village with only 44 inhabitants, located on the Umbrian hills at an altitude of 217 meters, at the foot of Mount Pugliano. The town is known for its ancient architecture and its relative isolation. Although it is not very well known by visitors, it is a place that deserves to be visited, especially if you love history and art.
History
Pieve Caina has a very ancient history: it belonged to the district of Perugia of Porta Santa Susanna as a "villa" until 1428, when it became a "castrum" in the district of Porta Eburnea. In 1515, the Priori of Perugia financed the reconstruction of the bridge over the Caina river with ninety florins. Today, the inhabitants always have to regulate the waters, especially in the rainiest periods, when the houses closest to the stream risk getting wet.
Monuments and places of interest
There are many monuments and places of interest in Pieve Caina. Here are some that I recommend you to visit:
- Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta: the church, built in the 12th century but then rebuilt in the late 1800s, has a painting entitled "Madonna della Misericordia", made by Michelangelo di Maestro Matteo in 1528.
- The castle: dating back to the 13th century, only the tower (14th century), almost in ruins, remains.
- Armellini Palace: built in 1520, it belonged to Cardinal Francesco Armellini, a court figure of Leo X.
- Vicinato village: beyond the stream and river, made up of the houses of the noble Perugians and the homes of the Augustinian monks. It is now owned by the University of Perugia.
- Chapel of San Vincenzo: dating back to the 16th century, with a small bell gable.
- Oak forest: a green area where you can spend relaxing moments in contact with nature.
Society
Pieve Caina is a quiet place where everyone knows each other and where there is great solidarity among the inhabitants. Since there are not many people, there are not many associations and social life is not very lively, but the inhabitants are very welcoming and ready to make friends.
Other projects
At the moment, there are no other projects related to Pieve Caina, but the village is an ideal place for those looking for peace and tranquility away from the chaos of the city.
