Papiano
Papiano: Among the Umbrian Hills
Hello friends, today we will talk about Papiano, a hamlet of the Municipality of Marsciano, located in the province of Perugia. This small village has an ancient history dating back to the Roman era, when it was inhabited by the Papii and Papinii families, from which its name probably derives. Over the centuries, it has suffered numerous attacks and has seen the passage of important figures such as the condottiero Braccio da Montone and the typographer Francesco Cartolari.
History
As mentioned earlier, the history of Papiano dates back to the Roman era, when it was inhabited by the Papii and Papinii families. In Emperor Conrad II's imperial diploma of 1027, the church of San Silvestro, which fell within its jurisdiction, was mentioned. In 1277, the village was fortified, and it suffered several attacks over the centuries. In 1428, it was assigned to the Perugian Porta di San Pietro (Perugia) county.
Society
Currently, Papiano has about 303 inhabitants, a decrease compared to the 2001 census. The village is divided into three parts: the oldest area, called "Sudentro," the village at the foot of the hill, and Papiano Station, a group of houses downstream. Every year, the "Blueberry Festival" takes place at the end of August, and small hot air balloons are launched on the occasion of the feast of St. Joseph on March 19.
Economy and Events
The village is a part of the "Authentic Villages of Italy Association." Besides the "Blueberry Festival" and hot air balloon launches, every year, "From Papiano With Rock," a festival organized by a group of young people from the village, takes place.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Papiano is rich in history and ancient monuments. Among the most important ones are the twelfth-century parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, the fifteenth-century church of Santa Maria, the seventeenth-century monastery of San Pietro, and the old bell tower, originally a watchtower. In the "Sudentro" district, there were watchtowers that served as borders, now unfortunately in ruins, but with some small parts still visible.
Sports
For sports lovers, there are some local associations such as A.C. Papiano and A.C.D. Papiano.
