Migliano
Welcome to Migliano
Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Migliano, a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Marsciano, in the province of Perugia. Despite being a small town with only 95 inhabitants, Migliano has many interesting things to offer: history, natural beauty, events, and much more!
Physical Geography
Migliano is located on top of a hill that marks the border with Perugia. At the foot of the hill flows the Fersinone stream, one of the most beautiful in the Umbria region, which carves a deep gorge in the valley that opens towards Marsciano and the Nestore river. Around the village of Migliano, the Rigo stream also flows, another tributary of the Nestore.
History
The Fersinone Valley has been inhabited since the earliest prehistoric times, as evidenced by the tools and arrowheads found. In the twelfth century, the Marsciano family, coming from Tuscany, built a castle that remained their property until the seventeenth century. These castle lords also had important descendants, such as Antonio di Ranuccio, a valiant captain of fortune who fought for the Republic of Venice and Florence. After several centuries, Migliano was definitively subjugated to Perugia in 1440. The castle was often used as a country residence by the Counts, thanks to its privileged position and the sulfuric thermal springs nearby.
Society
Despite the small number of inhabitants, Migliano is a welcoming and hospitable village. Here, you can breathe a sense of community, and people are very close to each other. The hamlet is also very active on the cultural front and often organizes events and festivals.
Economy and Events
Much of the old castle now houses a residence, and around it, there are several agritourisms. In the area, there are several sources rich in beneficial substances such as iron and magnesium, which attract tourists and visitors from all over the world. In the past, some charcoal makers and lime producers operated near the town, providing construction material obtained from stones taken from the bed of Fersinone.
For those who love good food, there is a festival not to be missed at the end of July! I'm talking about the "Sagra del cinghiale," an unmissable event to taste typical dishes based on this animal.
Monuments and Artistic Places
But now let's come to the beauties of Migliano! Here there are several monuments and artistic places to visit, including:
- The Castle (12th century), of which three towers, the walls, and the noble residence remain, recently renovated into a residence;
- Medieval archaeology excavations, inside the walls of the Castle;
- Church of Santa Maria Assunta (12th century), which preserves an altarpiece depicting the Madonna, from the Perugino school, and a copy of Raphael's "Transport of Christ's Body";
- Fersinone Valley, with water games, polished stones, and natural bends;
- Buca del Diavolo, shared with the San Vito in Monte hamlet. It is a cave where traces of the Neolithic period were found;
- Ripafalcaia, a gorge about 100 meters in altitude difference;
- Remains of the Rotaprona and Ospedale mills;
- Sentiero delle Settevalli, which crosses as many small ditches, all flowing into the Fersinone.
In short, Migliano is a small Umbrian gem that deserves to be discovered and appreciated! Thank you for visiting us.
