Marmora

A Small Town in the Mountains and Nature

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Marmora, a small town immersed in the nature of the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont. Marmora is a scattered municipality, which means that the inhabitants are not concentrated in a single urban area, but are spread out among various fractions within the municipal territory. Currently, only 51 people live there, but the town has a very interesting history.

History

The Municipality of Marmora obtained its coat of arms and flag only in 2011. The coat of arms consists of four parts representing the history of the town. Two of the parts, the eagle and the lion, are taken from the coat of arms of the La Marmora family, originating from the town. The flag, on the other hand, is a white and red party cloth.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Marmora has a very ancient chapel located in the fraction of San Sebastiano, which can be visited by tourists today. Inside, there are frescoes dating back to about 1450, made by the painter Giovanni (or Jean) Baleison, originally from Demonte, another municipality in Cuneo. The frescoes mainly depict episodes from the life of Jesus and Saint Sebastian. Among the particularities of the chapel is the fact that the apse was initially facing east, according to ancient tradition. In addition, the frescoes also represent some episodes from the Apocryphal Gospels, such as the midwife of Jesus, Zacchaeus, and the miracle of the growth of wheat, which is not found in the official Gospels.

Society

Like many other small mountain communities, the population of Marmora has undergone a strong decrease over the years. In 1911, about 600 people lived in the town, while today there are only 51 inhabitants. This is due to the depopulation of mountain territories, which has led many inhabitants to seek a better life elsewhere.

Administration

Marmora was part of the mountain community of Valli Grana and Maira, an association that grouped together some municipalities in the area. Today, the town is part of the Mountain Community of the Pinerolesi, Valli Chisone and Germanasca, which deals with the management of the territory and cultural heritage of the area.

Conclusions

In summary, Marmora is a town that has a lot to offer for those who love nature and history. Despite the small number of inhabitants, it has a very ancient chapel with interesting frescoes, and a territory immersed in the nature of the province of Cuneo. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy some peace, Marmora could be the perfect choice.
