San Brizio
Welcome to San Brizio: a small village in Lombardy
Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk about San Brizio, a village in the municipality of Marmirolo in the province of Mantua, in the Lombardy region. In this small hamlet there are only 182 inhabitants, but there is a lot to discover.
Location of San Brizio
San Brizio is located just 1.77 km from the center of the municipality of Marmirolo and can be reached via the road that leads to Roverbella. The Roggia Re, a very important watercourse for the area, also flows here, reaching the municipality of Marmirolo.
Origin of the name
Curious to know how San Brizio got its name? It seems that the name derives from the abbreviated form of Fabrizio, which means "blacksmith" in Latin. Interesting, isn't it?
A bit of history
Unfortunately, there is little information about the history of San Brizio. What we know for sure is that there was an oratory dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico, but it was demolished in the last decades of the 1700s. This church was visited by shepherds between 1575 and 1725 and contained a highly venerated image of Saint Fermo. In 1635, this image was replaced with another of the same saint.
The small stone and wood altar of the church was not very ornate but, nevertheless, every year on August 9, the day dedicated to Saint Fermo, a mass was celebrated and afterwards a party was organized, which all the inhabitants of the village participated in.
A curious historical note is related to the Gonzaga family, who owned a court in San Brizio. Don Giovanni Gonzaga (1671-1743), illegitimate son of Duke Ferdinando Carlo of Gonzaga-Nevers, had a property here.
Another curiosity is the report of July 19, 1728 by the Prefect of the Waters Doriciglio Moscatelli Battaglia, who complained about the abusive cavities in the watercourse Re, built to water the animals. These cavities caused the waters to reach the lands of the castle of Marmirolo.
Conclusions
Here you have some information about San Brizio, a small hamlet in the Mantua area. Despite the few historical information, it is still a place not to be missed. You can admire the landscapes of Lombardy and enjoy the tranquility of country life. See you in San Brizio!
