Avaglio
Avaglio: an ancient fraction at the foot of the Pistoia Mountains
Description
Avaglio is an ancient village located on the Pistoia Mountains in Tuscany. It occupies a panoramic position, surrounded by forests of chestnut trees, acacia, oak, fir, and maple. It is nestled among the hills of the Nievole Valley and sits at an altitude of about 750 meters above sea level, halfway between the Valdinievole plain and the highest peaks of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
History
The history of Avaglio dates back to prehistoric times when it was inhabited by the Friniati Ligurians. Later on, starting from the 3rd century BC, Roman colonists populated the area, as confirmed by archaeological excavations. In 1330, during a war led by the lifetime consul of Lucca, Castruccio Castracani, the village was burned down along with its homes and castle. The inhabitants fled to Marliana, and only in the 18th century did the reconstruction of the village and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo begin.
Economy
In the past, the economy of Avaglio was mainly based on chestnut and forestry production, sheep farming, and some agricultural activities. Today, the economy is based on forestry, tourism, fruit growing, strawberry and potato farming, and mushroom picking. The area also has some artisanal and service activities.
Access
Avaglio can be reached via the road from Ponte di Serravalle, which follows the upper course of the Nievole, or from the junction immediately after the village of Panicagliora on the regional road n.
Despite the strong depopulation of the mountainous area, Avaglio still has several activities in operation thanks to a steady flow of tourists, especially during the summer season. The village is equipped with excellent restaurants and accommodations to host visitors exploring the area.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Avaglio is a small fraction surrounded by nature and history, where the tradition of chestnut production, forestry, and mushroom picking are an integral part of daily life. With a growing tourism industry and the village in constant evolution, Avaglio is a place to discover and visit for those seeking an authentic experience in one of the most picturesque areas of Tuscany.
