Marcignago

Hi friends, today I'm talking to you about Marcignago, a small town in Lombardy, located in the province of Pavia. Marcignago has around 2400 inhabitants and is located in the north-western area of the province, between the Ticino river and the Naviglio Pavese.

History

The town has a probable Roman origin: its name comes from the name 'Marcinius'. However, the town became known especially in 1539, when the fief of Marcigago and Giovenzano was purchased by Ludovico Pallavicino, remaining in his family until its extinction in 1717. Later, the town passed to the Della Puella family, and in 1752 to a branch of the Visconti family. In 1757, the municipality of Marcignago joined the municipalities of Brusada, Cassina di Mezzo, Calignago, Molino Vecchio and Divisa.

The town is famous for the phrase 'quatordas e vutanta' which is considered an insult by its inhabitants. Brusada, on the other hand, belonged entirely to the Certosa di Pavia monastery, Calignago appeared in documents from the 12th century, Molino Vecchio was part of the Trivolzio fief, while Divisa in the Middle Ages was possibly the capital of a squad.

Symbols

The coat of arms and flag of Marcignago were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on December 27, 1991. The flag is a blue and white cloth.
