The village owes its name to the extremely rare freshwater spring that flows into the sea near the coast, called by ancient fishermen "cold water". Acquafredda played an important role in history when the revolutionary Costabile Carducci met his death on July 4, 1848, killed by the pro-Bourbonist Sapri Vincenzo Peluso.
