History of the Province of Asti

The history of the Province of Asti dates back to the 17th century when it was established with 42 municipalities. Later, in 1622, the province expanded to include 87 municipalities, some of which belonged to the Alba region. During the period of French domination from 1797 to 1814, the Province of Asti was part of the Marengo department with Alessandria as its capital. Returning under the rule of the House of Savoy, with the decree of 21 May 1814, Asti became a province again, aggregated to the administrative division of Alessandria. In 1935, the Province of Asti was re-established with Asti as its capital and a district consisting of 105 municipalities. After liberation, the province was formed by 120 municipalities that were reconstituted after being aggregated to more significant communal entities during the fascist period.
