Marano Principato
Marano Principato: a community born from an earthquake
Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you the story of Marano Principato, a municipality in the province of Cosenza in Calabria, which originated from a tragic event. On March 27, 1638, on Palm Sunday, an earthquake shook the area of Castelfranco and Rende, leading to the destruction of buildings. This disaster forced many residents to leave their homes and seek refuge in the farmhouses of the territory strip known as "Marano".
The birth of Marano Principato
Following the earthquake, tensions increased because it was not possible to agree on who should pay the taxes: the Prince Sersale of Castelfranco or the Marquis of Rende of Valle Siciliana Mendoza. The situation became so difficult that the king had to appoint a mediator to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the mediator was corrupted by gifts from the contenders, leading to the division of the territory. Part of Marano was then given to the jurisdiction of the Prince of Castelfranco, giving rise to Marano Principato, while the other part became Marano Marchesato, entrusted to the Marquis of Rende.
Until 1732, Castelfranco, Marano Principato, and Marano Marchesato constituted a single municipality, but later Marano Marchesato split off, and in 1800 it was the turn of Marano Principato.
