Maranello: The City of Ferrari

Hello everyone, today I will talk about the city of Maranello, a municipality located in the province of Modena in Emilia-Romagna. Known primarily for being the headquarters of the historic Ferrari factory, this city has a population of 17,309 and was awarded the title of city in 2009 by the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano.

Physical Geography

Maranello is located about 19 km south of Modena and is connected to the city via the provincial road 3 "Via Giardini". The territory is divided between the foothill area and the surrounding plain, occupied by fields and small industries. It is part of the Union of the Ceramics District municipalities, together with other municipalities in the area such as Fiorano Modenese, Formigine, Sassuolo, Frassinoro, Montefiorino, Palagano and Prignano sulla Secchia.

Maranello: the city of Ferrari - between history and innovation.

History

The city has a history that dates back to the Bronze Age and is enriched by archaeological discoveries, such as the remains of the Gorzano Terramare and the Cumarola necropolis dating back to the Copper Age. Subsequently, there were settlements of Ligurian populations, who were subjugated by the Roman legions in 189-179 BC.

The Roman presence is also attested by the Claudia road, an ancient road that was an alternative to the Emilia road and which was built by the consul Claudio. In 1987, the remains of a Roman-era furnace were discovered in the locality of Torre delle Oche, with exhibits on display at the archaeological museum in the Palazzo dei Musei in Modena.

The name Maranello probably derives from the settlement of a family from Marano sul Panaro, the Araldini or Arardini, who built the still existing castle. The castle was partially rebuilt after the earthquake of 1501 and the surrounding houses make up the old town of Maranello. In 1936, the castle was purchased by the famous painter and sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi, who restored and inhabited it. Today it is a private property not accessible to the public.

The Ferrari Factory

Since 1943, Maranello has been home to the Ferrari factory, the luxury sports car manufacturer founded by the Modenese Enzo Ferrari. The factory has been expanded over the years and has become a reference point for enthusiasts of prestigious cars around the world.

The main road that runs through the city, Via Giardini, a former Abetone state road, has assumed strategic importance for logistics and for all those who want to admire the automotive wonders produced at the Ferrari factory.

In conclusion, Maranello can be considered the city of Ferrari, a city that combines its millennial history with technological innovation and automotive excellence. If you want to visit the factory or discover the beauties of this municipality, Maranello is waiting for you!
