Maracalagonis

Maracalagonis: A Brief Introduction to the City

Maracalagonis is an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Cagliari, in Sardinia. With a population of 7,906 inhabitants, the city is characterized by a long history dating back to the Neolithic and Nuragic civilization. Over the centuries, Maracalagonis has been dominated by Phoenician and Carthaginian populations, the Republic of Pisa, and the Crown of Aragon before becoming an autonomous municipality.

The History of Maracalagonis

The territory of Maracalagonis has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the discovery of the Monte Claro culture necropolis in the locality of Cuccuru Craboni. Later, the Nuragic people left important traces, such as the remains of nuraghi towers. During the Phoenician and Carthaginian domination, the territory was mainly devoted to cereal cultivation. In the Middle Ages, the city was part of the judicial district of Cagliari, inserted in the district of Campidano di Calari. At the fall of the judicial district of Cagliari in 1258, Maracalagonis fell under the dominion of the Republic of Pisa, then under the Aragonese dominion since 1324. In the sovereign era of the Aragonese, Maracalagonis was formed from the union of two contiguous villages, "Mara" and "Calagonis", when the inhabitants of the latter locality moved to Mara.

Mara and Calagonis

Mara was a village dedicated to pastoralism since the Middle Ages, while Calagonis was a village adjacent to Mara. In the latter locality, Saint Stephen of Calagonis is venerated, born in AD 82 and martyred under the Roman emperor Trajan. In 1363, the Aragonese incorporated the village into the county of Quirra, established by the King of Aragon Peter IV of Aragon and granted to the Carroz family as a fief. In 1603, the county was transformed into a marquisate, a fiefdom first of the Centelles family and then of the Osorio de la Cueva family, redeemed in 1839 with the abolition of the feudal system.
