Mapello

Welcome to Mapello!

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the beautiful town of Mapello, located in Lombardy. Mapello is a small town with a population of 6,827 and is located at the foot of Mount Canto, about 15 kilometers west of the city of Bergamo.

Physical Geography

Many of you may be curious about the type of terrain on which Mapello is situated. The hilly area where the town is located is made up of Cretaceous soils, including clayey limestones, reddish brown, white, and black. Sandstone rock was once very popular in Mapello's construction works, but nowadays quarrying and stonemasonry activities have disappeared.

Mapello: history, geography, and beauty of Lombardy.

Origins of the Name

The name Mapello does not have a clear etymological origin, but it is thought to derive from the hilltop position of the town. In Italian, "mappa" refers to the location, and in Lombard dialect, "mapèl" refers to corn cobs or cauliflower. Less likely is that the name derives from the Lombard word for "Aconitum napellus".

History

During the Roman era, a castrum, a military encampment that could accommodate up to 6,000 men, may have existed in the Mapello area. Later, the territory became part of the well-preserved centurial Mapello - Bonate Sopra - Bonate Sotto. During the Middle Ages, Mapello was involved in numerous military conflicts, and the population experienced devastation, poverty, and famine. Over the centuries, the town underwent several alterations, but today it still retains many of its historical treasures.

From the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age

The first document attesting to the origin of Mapello dates back to May 774 and deals with the testament of the gasindio Taidone, where a massaricia house in the Mapello fund is mentioned. During the Middle Ages, the area was transformed into a terrain of military clashes. In 867, in an exchange, the existence of the church of San Cassiano was attested, which was then demolished in 1875 due to its state of abandonment. In the current industrial area of the town, only a piece of the church wall remains.
