Borgo Mezzanone: an unusual place
Hello everyone! Today we will talk about a village in Manfredonia called Borgo Mezzanone. This location is quite unusual because it is quite far from the city center, about 45 km away, and 15 km from the provincial capital.
History of the village
Borgo Mezzanone was founded in 1934, during the fascist period, as part of the reclamation of the land. The village could house around 700 inhabitants, and the first settlers came from five neighboring towns, including Bovino, Manfredonia, and San Ferdinando di Puglia. Originally, the village was named "Borgo La Serpe", in memory of the young fascist Raffaele La Serpe, who died during an attempt to occupy the labor office of San Severo. Later, the village was renamed "Mezzanone".
The architecture of the village was entrusted to the architect Domenico Sandri and the engineer Giovanbattista Canevari, while the work was carried out by Scazzieri Giulio's company from Foggia and the builder Branduzzi. Among the works present in the village, there is a Fascist House with a meeting room and a gym, a school with cottages for teachers, a church with about 300 seats, a C.R.I. building with a health center for malaria, a shop, a tobacco shop, a public phone, a communal oven, and an electric cabin.
Economy of the village
As a rural village, Borgo Mezzanone has always had a strong connection with agricultural activities. However, in recent years, the village's territory has seen the construction of an important First Reception Center for immigrants, which includes numerous facilities, such as the "Casa Speranza" reception house for passing immigrants, a Caritas office for orientation and information services for asylum seekers, a shower-bath service, a health service, and a food and clothing service.
Notes
It is important to note that in recent years there has been discussion about a potential separation of the village's territory from the municipality of Manfredonia, but this issue has never been politically addressed by local administrators.
