History

The history of San Martino sul Fiora dates back to the sixteenth century, when the Republic of Siena decided to repopulate the uninhabited areas of Maremma. The farm, the church dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, and the houses for farm laborers and artisans made this village one of the liveliest centers in the area. In 1651, San Martino was erected into a marquisate and over the centuries passed under the control of Sovana and then of Sorano. In 1929, it was finally annexed to the municipality of Manciano.

Monuments and places of interest

The church of San Martino is the main monument of the hamlet: built in the sixteenth century and completely rebuilt in the 1950s, it is an imposing structure in neo-Romanesque architecture with Moorish style accents. Inside, there are two seventeenth-century paintings, while the bell tower with a public clock was installed in 1985.

Near the village, there are the remains of the convent of San Francesco, founded at the same time as the birth of the village.

San Martino sul Fiora has had fluctuating demographic evolution, with a peak of 659 inhabitants in the 1930s. Currently, according to Istat data, the population is about 211 inhabitants.
