History of Marsiliana d'Albegna

Marsiliana d'Albegna has a very ancient history. The original settlement dates back to the 6th century BC, but was destroyed by a fire. Later, the territory belonged to the city of Vulci and was identified with the city of Caletra. In the high-medieval period, the current village of Marsiliana was born, belonging to the heritage of the Tre Fontane Abbey in Rome. Over the centuries, Marsiliana came under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family, then of Siena and finally of the Medici who incorporated it into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In the 18th century, the castle of the village became the property of the Corsini princes of Florence who transformed it into a farm.

Religious architecture

The Church of Maria Regina del Mondo is the parish church of the hamlet. It was built in 1959 by Carlo Boccianti. The Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate is a gentrified chapel of medieval origins of the Marsiliana farm.

Military architecture

The Marsiliana Farm is located on the top of the hill overlooking the village. It was built as a castle in the 12th century and was commanded first by the Aldobrandeschi counts, then by Siena, the Medici and finally by the Corsini princes of Florence. The Castle of Stachilagi is located east of the town, and is situated on the top of a hill that dominates the valley of the Elsa torrent. It dates back to the 13th century and was built near the pre-existing Selva abbey with an adjoining monastery.

Archaeological Sites

The Necropolis of Banditella is an archaeological site discovered during excavations by Prince Tommaso Corsini. It dates back to the orientalizing period from the 7th century BC to the 6th century BC and has unearthed the famous Corsini fibula, a gold brooch decorated with the granulation technique. In the "ivory circle" a writing tablet was found, inscribed with the oldest known Etruscan alphabet, the "Marsiliana tablet."
